Identify the unit before comparing prices

Natural stone may be offered by weight, pallet, piece, layer, area, linear measure, or another product-specific unit. A price has little meaning until you know exactly what unit it describes. Two quotes that use different units cannot be compared by their headline numbers alone, and even similarly named units may contain different material mixes or packaging.

Ask the seller to write the product name, selling unit, quantity, and unit price on the quote. Confirm whether the material is sold only in full units or whether partial quantities are available. For individually selected pieces, verify whether the listed price applies to each piece, its weight, or a group.

For a patio, our guide to how much flagstone you need turns a sketch into a clear order.

Before you compare edging listings, learn how to measure stone landscape edging along every run.

Once you place your order, learn how to get ready for a stone delivery at your site.

With the units clear, use our guide to compare natural stone supplier quotes side by side.

Connect the unit to your design

Your project dimensions describe the finished work, while the selling unit describes how material leaves the yard. An installer connects the two by accounting for stone dimensions, thickness, pattern, joints, cuts, breakage, sorting, visible faces, corners, and site conditions. A generic conversion from an unrelated product can create a misleading quantity.

Bring a measured sketch and photos to both the supplier and installer. Ask the supplier what range of material is normally included in the unit and what information they provide for estimating that specific product. Ask the installer to calculate or verify the order for the planned layout. Clarify who is responsible for the final quantity before purchase.

Read the complete quote

Compare the product description and quality range as carefully as the price. One quote may include selected sizes or matching corners, while another may describe a broad mix. Ask about packaging deposits, pallet charges, loading, delivery, fuel or access charges, taxes, and any minimum order. Confirm policies for returns, restocking, unused full units, and partial units.

If coverage information is offered, ask what assumptions support it and whether it is a range or a project estimate. Keep natural variation in mind and have the installer set an appropriate allowance for the actual design. Ask whether the quote identifies the current inventory or only a general product description. A useful comparison puts every quote on the same scope: same stone or acceptable alternative, same needed components, same delivered location, and the same understanding of what can be returned.
